The Circular Ruins by Antonella Aguilar

A man who tries so hard to impose another man on reality by dreaming him
does not seem to be common human behaviour, but in this short story this is what the author, Jorge Luis Borges, focuses on.

A wizard who wants to bring his imaginary son into the real world is the protagonist of a story where dreaming is in every moment.

The wizard dreams about some students in a temple, he keeps only one of those who dares to oppose him, this pupil becomes real and is educated by him.

After that, the boy is sent to another ruined temple which is destroyed by fire but he does not die in that terrible accident. Unfortunately, as a result of this, the teacher realizes that this divine son is alive

because he is a projection of his dreams to find a terrible outcome.

A story that must be read because of its surrealist way of telling the events, those that will make you enjoy this beautiful alternative of writing. You may also find yourself a bit lost and confused if you do not pay a special atenttion while you are reading.

So, to prevent this kind of mishap you should submerge your senses in the sentences, thinking carefully in every detail that is written and analysing it.

Borges is one of the most important writers from our country and he will open your mind to a parallel world if you read his amazing short stories, begining of course, with “The Circular Ruins”.

Review: "The circular ruins"

By Catriel Benavídez

‘The circular ruins’ is one of the most well known short stories of the Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges. J. L. Borges is recognised because of his short stories all over the world.
‘The circular ruins’ is about a man who arrives in a land which was totally unknown only with the purpose of dreaming a man and imposing him on reality.
The story is very catching and has a wide vocabulary. Maybe you have to pay much attention because of that, but finally you enjoy it.
I would recommend to buy and read ‘The circular ruins’, especially if you like reading fantastic stories. I am sure it will catch your attention and you will like the end of this great short story.

Circular Ruins, by Agustina Claps

This short story was written by Jorge Luis Borges; it's about a wizard who wanted to dream the perfect person. After a few nights of strange dreams, he dreamed a classroom, he was the teacher, he was teaching; he started to look for the perfect person, but he did not find him; the next night he found a pupil in the same classroom that could be him, but then he knew that he wasn't. He kept looking, but he failed. He was tired; He started to have insomnia, so he decided to go to the forest to get tired. He talked to the "fire god", looking for help, the god asked him t adore him, and he would help him; the wizard did it. The end is "circular", an open ending.

In my opinion this is a very nice and educative story, it describes every scene very well, with interesting details, very complex vocabulary, it leave you a teaching.

On the other hand it's a very complicated story, the vocabulary is for people that have a very good language. You have to look for information to understand the story, becouse it uses synonyms that we are not use to reading

I recommend this story to language teachers, or professional people, and to look for information before and after the reading, to take advantage of this beautiful and strange story.

A noise in the middle of the night

One day I was watching TV when I heard a noise. I was alone because my parents had gone to Mar del Plata. I didn`t go because I had to study.

I was very frightened, for this reason I closed all the doors. Then I heard another noise, I looked through the window and I saw a shadow. Some minutes later, somebody knocked at the door, I asked: “Who are you?” and nobody answered. Then he began to hit the door and cried some words but I didn`t understand.

At this moment I called the police. Ten minutes later the police arrived and arrested him. They said that he was a drunk man who wanted to rob.

When the police left my house I closed all the doors and windows and I went to bed. I hope I will never see this man again .

Alan’s story

The following story is real.
It happened when we were 13 years old, and a friend invited us to sleep to her house. We didn´t know what was going to happen that night but this was a night we would never forget because it was the beginning of everything.
Let 's go back to the past, to this summer night.
We were chatting, having fun when our friend told us a story. We listened to it but we didn’t believe it at all. She told us that a few weeks ago , her sisters and herself were playing the game of the cup and a ghost contacted them. He told them that his name was Alan and that he was 6 years old when his mother killed him.
He wanted his story to be known by everyone and he looked for revenge.
After telling this story our friend said to us that she didn’t feel well in her house because strange things started to happen.
This night we took a lot of photos in the garden . A few months later watching those photos we noticed that in one of them a little boy appeared like a ghost in white. We remembered that this night was very late and we were alone. And then we started to believe in our friend’s story.
Until the night our friend played the game of the cup ,strange things happened in her house.Every time we go to her house we feel that something is with us, when we are on the 2° floor we listen to noises in the 1° floor, like a person moving furniture, and the light of her bedroom turns on and off or the door opens alone. When we talked to her by the phone we hear voices and screams.
Apart from those facts, she started to dream things that she doesn’t understand ,like her house but it was different,it was in the middle of the field and there were no houses around. She dreamed that she was on her sister’s bedroom and saw a little boy hiding something in the floor,on the corner.
One day she seemed to see a boy entering her sister’s bedroom. So she went to see, thinking that the boy was his nephew. When she entered the room...it was empty, but she was very brave, and remembering her dream she went to the corner, and noticed that the wood of the floor could be removed. So she did it.
And then, under all the dust, she found a picture,in which was her house like in the dream with a little boy and a woman in front of it.To our friend the woman looked familiar, so she showed the picture to her mother to know if she could recognise her.
Her mother recognised the woman at first sight:She was her great-aunt.Her mother told our friend that the woman was the previous owner of the house, and that she had a son called Alan that dissappeared at the edge of 6 in a misterious way. She also said that the woman went crazy, and saw her son’s ghost, so one day almost burnt the house and she was taken to a mental hospital.
Our friend told her mother what had happened and went to see this woman. When they talked to the woman, she confessed everything. She told them that she had killed the boy because she was jealous as his father always paid attention to his son and not to her.
She confessed everything because the boy appeared every night in her dreams, and she was tired of that. She also confessed that the boy was buried in the basement.
So,our friend and her mother reported this to the police and it went to the house and dug up the boy’s body. The case became well known . After that Alan could rest in peace and the house was free..nothing stange happened again.

A strange country house.

Once upon a time, there was a couple in their way to their holidays. The man, who was called Peter was driving in her own car with Lucy, his girlfriend.
When they were going, there was a thick fog in the street so Peter changed the road. They were lost, and there was only an isolated house on their way.
Lucy thought that they shouldn’t stop there, but Peter said that it was a nice house where they could spend one night. So they picked up their luggage and entered the house. Suddenly Lucy found an old newspaper with a photo of a young couple which had died in a road accident on their way to the country house. This news called Lucy’s attention.
At night Peter and Lucy went out to find a restaurant because in the house there was nothing to eat. Two hours later they couldn’t find a restaurant and they decided to come back to the house. When they arrived the lights of the house were off, that called Lucy’s attention because she had turned the lights on when they had left the house. So she decided to get into the house and turned on the lights, but when she did so the radio was on, and that was very strange for Lucy because she didn’t see a radio in the house. So Lucy turned on the lights and the radio went off. After that she was afraid and she decided to call her boyfriend, but when she went out Peter was lying on the floor so she ran to the house and went upstairs to call the police.
When she spoke to the police station and gave the address of the house to the policeman, he said that this house had burned down twenty years ago. She was so desperate, so she went downstairs and a spirit appeared and she died of a heart attack.

USA in 1929, Argentina today (5)

After Reading the book “Cinderella man” the true story of the heavyweight Jim Braddock, we have found several similarities with that period of the history, 1929, and Argentina today.
We can say that the economic history has changed a lot. Once it was all right and suddenly the system crashed and caused a real disaster. As a matter of fact, it is normal; it happens all around the world and there are very similar stories in different countries. For instance, the Argentinian’s one.
To begin with in 1928 in North America the economy was thriving, people were good, they could afford their bills and support their families. In 1929 the US stock market collapsed. Because of that people’s life changed totally: people started to lose their jobs and had debts so they could neither pay them nor support their families. Therefore a lot of them were homeless and that “Great Depression” was something which the US couldn’t recover fast.
On the other hand throughout all its economic history Argentina had very similar situations. Here, nowadays people are homeless, without job and some families can’t support themselves and from our point of view all this is the cause of great insecurity.

USA in 1929, Argentina today (4)

After reading the book “Cinderella Man” the true story of the heavyweight Jim Braddock, we have found several similarities with that period of the history, 1929, and Argentina today.
During the twenties, in United States of America, economy was prosperity. Everybody had jobs and it was time of social changes, new fashions, new machines, and exciting new music. After World War I, American economy grew, and many people were making lot of money. People were happy, with a good future.
Everybody thought that happiness will never end, but the country was producing more than it needed and the end came suddenly. On black Tuesday, 29thOctober 1929 US stock market collapsed, and the whole system crashed. The economy failed, banks closed, families lost their money, and millions of people lost their jobs and homes. Most Americans lived on the streets, in cars, on the subway and in parks. People built hoovervilles to live in.
The reality that is lived today in Argentina is hopeless and similar to that of USA. Many people are without job. They are poor and lived in shantytowns like people used to live in 1929’s in US. Nowadays insecurity is one of the big problems, robberies and kidnappings are usually seen. That is a consequence of the lack jobs. We can say that the deficiency of a viable project is the biggest cause of the crisis that is lived in Argentina. The inefficiency of Argentinian government to solve usual problems is the cause of the slow development.
These are some of the causes of the crisis in Argentina.

A wicked place

Our story begins when an anthropologist called Mathew Stuart discovered, with his group of workers, an ancient building buried in The Sahara desert.
When they finally entered the building, they discovered that, inside that building there was a cemetery. All the gravestones had chains around them.

The night came and Mathew and his team were camping inside the building (which was an old church), in a big plataform near the cross.

In the middle of the night, Mathew woke up suddenly because he had heard a sound. When he opened his eyes, he saw a woman, very pale and dressed with a white and large dress.

-Who are you? - Mathew asked.

-I am Sara- the woman said.

Her voice was very low, like a whisper.

-What are you doing here?- Mathew asked.

-I am condemned, trapped here for all eternity- she answered.

-Why?- he asked.

-I committed suicide. My soul is wicked- Sara said.

Suddenly, a lot of people started to appear from the tumbs.

-We are all wicked- Sara whispered.

The souls began to walk towards him, but they suddenly stopped.

They can 't be near the cross- thought Mathew.

As fast as they appeared, they disappeared. The next day, when all the team was awake, they found, (written in the stone base of the cross) a small legend:

“This building is wicked. It is the prison for the sinner souls, which don 't deserve to go to heaven.

They will stay here, suffering for all eternity and paying for their crimes”.

It was the end of good times in North America in the 1920`s when the economy failed and as a result ten thousand factories in the New York area closed down and suddenly millions of people were out of work.
The American economy did not recover and a lot of Americans lost their homes. People started to live on the streets, in cars, on the subway and in Central Park.
On October 29, 1929 the banks closed and companies went out of business.
This was called the Crash of 1929.
The economic and social situation in Argentina, during the financial crisis that exploded in 2001 was very hard because a lot of people lost their jobs, many people lived on the streets or on the subway; and all over the country people began building shanty towns to live in.
In the first six months of this year, statistics show that the poorest part of the country is the North-East, 26,3 % of the population is considered poor, and a further 7,1 % suffers from extreme poverty.

In Argentina the financial crisis exploded in 2001, plunging 50% of the population into poverty.
According to statistics recently issues by INDEC, in the first six moths of this year poverty in Argentina dropped to 13,9%. In number, this amounts to 3.429.000 people in Argentina, of whom 99.500 are considered destitute. They fall under the extreme poverty line, which is based on the inability to afford what INDEC deems to be “minimum dietary requirements”.
The poorest part of the country is the North-East, where statistics show that 26,3% of the population is considered poor, and a further 7,1% suffers from extreme poverty.
The 64,34% of the Argentinian people lose their jobs and don’t have any food to eat. Some people lose their homes too and die in the streets.

Dream or Reality

My family and I have lived in Georgetown since I was three years old.
We used to live in front of a cemetery until something happened to us. One night I was having dinner alone because my parents were at the theatre and the phone rang. I answered and a strange voice said:
-"Look at the cemetery"
I started to feel very scared but I went to the window,I was looking through it, and suddenly all dead people came out of their tumbs. I was so scared that I ran to my room and closed all the doors and windows. The dead bodies broke the front door and came into the house. I tried to escape but they were to many following me. One of them was my best friend Johnny. He caught me by my neck and bit me. I started bleeding and I fell to the floor. Suddenly I heard a familiar voice calling me it was my mum. I was in the theatre with them and I did not know why I had fallen asleep and I was dreaming. When I came back to my house I look myself at the mirror and I had a big scar in my neck.

A night with the driver

Many years ago, Mark took a taxi at 3:00 AM after a friend’s party. When he got in, he told the driver: -“To Evergreen st. please” – When the driver saw him, Mark noticed that he had an evil look. The fire of hell was shining in his eyes. But after a few seconds he decided that it was all his imagination.
He was very tired because of the party and he only wanted to be in his bed. The driver said: -“I know a shortcut gentleman”-
-“Ok”- Mark replied. And the next thing he knew was that he was asleep. He had very strange dreams. He dreamt that he was running in a dark place without direction. And someone was chasing him, and shouting his name.
He woke up in the morning lying on his bed. He had no idea of what had happened the night before. Suddenly he saw a note in his chest:

“Don’t bother about the bill, I had a great night. You have very fast legs
not everyone can escape from death”

Review "The Circular Ruins"

The Circular Ruins is known as one of the most famous and important Borges´ short stories. It’s written in such an interesting way that reflects different kinds of senses which, at the same time, make you create peculiar scenes and settings of the story.
The writer talks about symbols and signs which are part of the story of his life and they are likely to help you to look for different ways to understand what he really wants to express.
This story is about a man who is all by himself dreaming of another man who he wants to bring to life. He used to go to a temple and fell asleep and while he was sleeping, he dreamt about this creature that had been invented by himself.
On the one hand, the writer looks for a lot of expressions and types of writing that make the short story hard to understand. It’s common to find in this literary work unknown words which change the meanings of sentences.
On the other hand, you are bound to be concentrated and enthused as you read it, because it’s more than a short story, its creative and exciting.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it, although it’s just for people who are used to reading good literature.

The Circular Ruins: Review

"The Circular Ruins" is a short story by Jorge Luis Borges, and it is one of his best known stories. It is about a wizard, whose only job was to dream of the perfect man, so as to create him.

On the down side, I believe this story is quite complicated to understand because of the sophisticated terminology that Borges uses in all of his literary works. Besides, the plot is already complex, apart from the elaborated phrases.

On the plus side, however, the author managed to create an interesting piece that people who have studied beforehand the symbols that are repeated in all of his writings, will enjoy. It is also admirable how he could narrate so much in such a short story.

Over all, I would not recommend this particular story to be read by people who have not researched enough about it before. Otherwise, a lot of essential things would be lost.

Circular Ruins

The circular ruins written by Jorge Luis Borges is a short story about a man who decides to create his perfect son while dreaming. This is one of the most well known short stories by Borges.
On the positive side, the short story catches you word by word till the very end. The story line is quite vivid although it is a clam character. Borges describes everything in detail.
On the other hand, you need a certain level of English. Wide and specific vocabulary is required to understand the story. Children may not enjoy or understand the story because what was said before.
Finally, I would recommend this literary work because not reading it would be a pity. Grown up people will enjoy it much more than youngters.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing in order to complain about the computer game you offered in a catalogue, which has not been as good as it was supposed to.

First of all, I had to wait three weeks for the game while it was said that delivery would be prompt.

Secondly, the game was too childish for teenagers, and we did not find it action-packed but boring.

Finally, I founded the same game cheaper in my local store, although you said that your price was ‘unbeatable’. In addition, the instructions provided were not clear as it was advertised but unreadable, and the computer magazine has never come.

In conclusion, I would like another game from your company, or a refund.

Yours faithfully,

Lucas Pavlov

Stop Complaining

Dear Customers:
Let me introduce myself: my name is Freddie and I work at the customers service department. I’m writing to all of you to complain about your complaint.
You are always sending messages saying “I don’t like this” or “I have a problem with that”, but you never ever ask how we are doing or say anything nice. I have been working here for ten years, and we haven’t got a single letter saying “Congratulations, your products are great” or “I’m very satisfied, thank you very much”.
Sometimes we are told that our products claim to be thing they are not, but: Who in earth can stand up and say, honestly, that he had never lied? We might have lied little and we might have had some problems with products that didn’t work as we expected them to, but I’m sure that isn’t such a big deal.
Concluding this letter, honestly: stop complaining so much and you’ll live happier and longer, I’m not lying this time.
Yours sincerely
Freddie.

Cold weather

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about an issue that has been bothering me since about mid-May: cold weather.

First of all, I have to admit I am a Summer person, so I naturally dislike this time of the year, every year. However, there are places in the world where you can enjoy a warm Winter. If those people can have it, then it should be equal for everyone. There’s really no point for Winter: most of the plants die, people get seasonal colds and animals hide and sleep.

In Summer, or Spring, people are happy. In Winter everything’s dark and boring. We don’t even get snow! That’s pretty much all the fun of the season.

But what really annoys me of this time is the clothes. When it’s warm, you can wear different shirts, T-shirts, shorts, skirts, trousers, different types of shoes... in Winter, your choices are limited, unless you’re willing to get really cold. Long trousers, always the same coat (because they’re not cheap and most people only have one), and loads of warm clothes below that. It seems pointless to me.

So I was wondering if there’s something that can be done about it? I know I, and many other people around the world, would really appreciate it.

Yours faithfully,
Ami Reynoso

Dear Mr Jones,

I am writing to you to complain about the inconvenients that I am having in the flat.

To begin with, you had told me that this was one of the most quiet flats in the neighborhood and I can not sleep because of the incessant traffic specially at night.

Moreover you said the people here were very kind, the doorman is very agressive with me and my guests, and the same happens with the gardener. And I don’t want to leave my children here alone because of them.

Finally, you promised me that you would have special care with my mail. Because I am a lawyer and I am all the time receiving very important letters or information and it is the third time that my mail is missing.

I hope you can solve these matters.

Yours Faithfully,

Agustina Barbaste.

Action is needed!

Dear Sir/Madam,

I want to express my strong dissatisfaction with the inefficency of the goverment in taking measures to prevent the expansion of the virus H1N1. For candidates it was more important that people voted than trying to do something about the illness.

Firstly, they let planes travelled as always when the virus appeared in Mexico instead of cancelling the flights to prevent. Unfortunately the illness arrived to our country and the chaos started.

Secondly, hospitals were not prepared enough to face this prblem and now they are paying the consequences. It is also important to protect doctors and nurses if not they will catch the virus, and no one will cure patients.

Finally, an intelligent measure woud be to close shopping centres, pubs, cinema, etc so people have less oportunities to catch the frightening virus.

I hope that you will take further action to prevent people from getting ill and panic.

Your faithfully,

Laura Geretto

the chandellier

Jane was crying while Mark was hugging her, he could not believe what she had told him, it was impossible. William tried to catch those frightened eyes that had scared her friend, but he couldn´t.
They had met at University 5 years ago and since then they used to travel every summer together. But the last holidays were the last ones. They went to Peru, to Machu Pichu because Jane and Mark loved that place. William rented a big house, “it´s too big” thought Jane when they arrived, however she never told this to the boys.
At night, Mark and William went to a pub to play pool, Jane hated it, so she stayed at home preparing dinner, she cooked very well. Jane always prepared meat, but also salad because Mark was a vegetarian. Vegetables were outside the house, so she had to go outside to pick up lettuce. She was very attentive because she was a frightening girl, she pick up the vegetables and entered the house. It was impossible. The door was closed and the windows too. Jane started to shout but no one heard her. A shadow aproached her holding a chandellier that allowed Jane to see him. He had a white skin like snow and big teeth that showed to her. He moved slowly and calmly that made Jane more nervous. She couldn´t move, she saw him sliding but not touching the floor. She was in shock.
When Mark and William arrived, they saw Jane shaking near the trees shouting `help´ and asking for Edgard.

A Christmass without presents.

One of the worst moments of my life just happened a few days before Christmas. In those days everybody was decorating their houses with a lot of colours and lights, while preparing the details for the party. Everybody was doing that including my family and I.

That day, my mum had the idea to go shopping to buy presents for the rest of my family. We went to the shopping centre and wandered looking for and buying some gifts. Then, when we finished, we came back home.

The next day in the afternoon, two thieves got into my house and took our money and other things, among them, the presents!!! So, for Christmas my family didn´t receive any presents.

In the end, during the party, we told the story to everybody and we were grateful to be able to share this so special day without gifts but in family.

I’m too young for prison.

I had never been so scared in my entire life: I thought I would be sent to prison. It was a couple of days after New Year’s Eve and I had loads of firecrackers and fireworks left.

I invited my friend Jack and we went to an abandoned supermarket to play with the fires. At first everything was alright: we exploded a couple of chairs and an old machine, and we broke a part of the wall. Then we found an old fire extinguisher and Jack decided to make it explode. I still don’t know how he did it, but he took many of the biggest crackers and fifteen minutes later he shouted at me: “Run!”. We hid behind a column and heard one of the louder explosions ever. We were laughing our heads off.

After some seconds of silence, the building started to shake, every time harder and harder. We ran away as fast as we could and only turned back when we were 50 meters away. We couldn’t believe our eyes: the building was coming down in front of us. “We are criminals” Jack said with almost no breath. “There is a policeman there. Run! Run!” I shouted.

That night Jack stayed at home but he ate nothing and he didn’t sleep. Neither did I. The next morning, we were watching TV and we were still nervous. We heard at the local news that the supermarket we saw had been demolished the previous day for the construction of a new square: I never felt as relieved as that moment.

The adventurous Chuck

It was the worst holiday that Chuck had ever had. He had never been to a place in the Argentinian coast, but he went to Las Toninas that summer. He thought that it would be a great place to meet lots of people but he was wrong.
At first, when he arrived at Las Toninas, he didn’t see people. He had gone by bike and alone, so he wanted to meet people to have fun. Suddenly a man appeared, he said that he was a hotel owner and gave Chuck a map of Las Toninas and said that his hotel was the best of the coast. He didn’t have money, because in the way a girl had stolen from him, but he decided to go to the hotel. When he arrived, the strange man received him with a smile, and while he was entering the hotel a group of men appeared and started to hit him. After a while, he managed to escape and run away from this place.
When he arrived home he started to cry because he was afraid and he didn’t understand why those bad men had hit him in that strange place.

Charly García - Peperina

Peperina is a famous song written by Serú Giran (it was form by Charly García, David Lebon, Oscar Moro and Pedro Aznar) it is very popular because it was written for a woman journalist that had criticized the band and the music that they played, also she wrote her criticals in a magazine. In response to this Seru Giran wrote this song, Peperina is also a CD´s name of the group. We choose this song because we like it and also we are all the day singing it.
Claps, Agustina; De Luca, Ana Julia

vive escribiendo postales
duerme con los visitantes
y juega con los locales
su cuerpo tiene pegada
grasa de las capitales.
Te amo, te odio, dame más
Te amo, te odio, dame más.
Te amo, te odio, dame más.

The worst holidays I have ever had

It was the worst holiday I have ever had. I went to La Lucila del Mar in December, hoping to meet new friends, but I met a nasty guy: his name was Paul and he was 17.
At first we were friends. The first time we met , he was playing a football match on the beach. After a few days, I got used to going to his home at night. I met his girlfriend, his brother and his parents. But one day there was nobody at Paul's home, except for himself and I. Suddenly, he took a knife from the kitchen and stole my mobile phone and my money. Then, he kicked me off his home.
In the end, I had to come back to Burzaco because I had no money, but I promise I'll find him some day and I'll take revenge.

Prom Night

I will never forget the night that was supposed to be one of the best nights of my life. It was the night of my graduation party but it ended up being a horrible experience. The thing is, I never made it to the party!

We were going by car and the traffic was stuck. To make things worse we were already running late. I was hysterical and my dad, who was driving, was really nervous. As soon as the cars in the front of us started to move and cleared the street my dad speeded and without us noticing, a car appeared out of nowhere and hit us in the front.

Luckily, nothing happened to any of us, but our car wouldn't start. Someone called 911 and the police came immediatly, but all I wanted was to get out of there to go to my party!

Obviously, I couldn't. At least not until the police let us go, after everything was fixed and alright. And that wasn't until five hours later. If I could, I'd have left earlier, but they made me stay. When we were finally free, I went to my party, but only to find out that it had ended a few hours earlier.

The end.

Aquamarine H2O

Last summer I went to Indonesia with my family. We arrived there on January 8th, we used that day to have a rest in the hotel. The next day I woke up very early, and my sister and I went to the “Spring Beach”, that beach had been discovered in 1987. The founders said that it was a very strange beach, that it had the whitest sand that anyone had ever seen and that the fish had the most strange skin in the ocean. So we decided to visit it. There weren’t any people on the beach.

We were sleeping, and we felt something rare on our feet, we woke up and we saw a very big fish with a body of a girl, it was a mermaid. We started to shout, and the mermaid too. When we calmed down she or that thing said to us “hello” and we started to talk about our life, and who we were.

Then my mother, father, and my two brothers arrived there, and they met the mermaid. Her name was Aquamarin. She fell in love with my little brother and he did too, (they have the same age), their confession was in their eyes. She needed to be a real human being to be with him. And my sister and I started to gather information “how to be a mermaid and a real human”. They had to kiss each other.

The days passed and there were only two left. They kissed each other and she became a very beautiful girl. We decided to take her with us, to come back to Argentina.

She adapted here very well, she goes to my school, and my brother and Aqua are still together nowadays.

The End

By Agustina Claps

A not lovely Anniversary.

As he was entering the house, the heavy dark smoke and the smell of burnt chicken getting out of the kitchen frigthened him. That day was his first marriage anniversary and his wife was going to cook her husband’s favourite dish so as to celebrate their love.

The man ran desperately to the kitchen. When he stepped into the room his face turned completely white as he saw his lovely wife on the floor and a pond of blood around her right hand. She was shaking violently while she was holding her arm. Her husband took her and realised she had cut her right thumb with a knife she was using.

None of the two spoke, both were so impressed that they could not say a word. Suddenly, a strong voice shouted, ‘Cut, good footage’ while all the producers of the flim were clapping the actress and actor ‘s performances.

Let it be.

We choose let it be because it’s our favourite song of the Beatles. We like this song because Paul McCartney wrote it after he dreams with his mother. He explain that his mother died when he was only 14 and that thing inspires him to wrote this song.

By Juan Cruz and Fran.

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree,
There will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.

And when the night is cloudy,
There is still a light that shines on me,
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, let it be,
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

Queen: Bohemian Rapsody

Bohemian Rapsody

Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide,
No escape from reality.
Open your eyes, Look up to the skies and see,
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy,
Because I'm easy come, easy go, Little high, little low,
Any way the wind blows doesn't really matter to me, to me.

Mama just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger, now he's dead.
Mama, life had just begun,
But now I've gone and thrown it all away.
Mama, ooh, Didn't mean to make you cry,
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow,
Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters.

Too late, my time has come,
Sends shivers down my spine, body's aching all the time.
Goodbye, ev'rybody, I've got to go,
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth.
Mama, ooh, I don't want to die,
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all.

I see a little silhouetto of a man,
Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango.
Thunderbolt and lightning, very, very fright'ning me.
(Galileo.) Galileo. (Galileo.) Galileo, Galileo figaro
Magnifico. I'm just a poor boy and nobody loves me.
He's just a poor boy from a poor family,
Spare him his life from this monstrosity.
Easy come, easy go, will you let me go.
Bismillah! No, we will not let you go.
(Let him go!) Bismillah! We will not let you go.
(Let him go!) Bismillah! We will not let you go.
(Let me go.) Will not let you go.
(Let me go.) Will not let you go. (Let me go.) Ah.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
(Oh mama mia, mama mia.) Mama mia, let me go.
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me, for me.

So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye.
So you think you can love me and leave me to die.
Oh, baby, can't do this to me, baby,
Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here.

Nothing really matters, Anyone can see,
Nothing really matters,
Nothing really matters to me.

Any way the wind blows.

We decided to choose 'Bohemian Rhapsody' because, apart from the fact that it is a classic and the most popular Queen's song, It's also one of the greatest songs ever written.
It was recorded in 1975 and released on the same year by Freddie Mercury, inmediatly it became a hit. The album where it apeared at first was "A Night at the Opera". The music is very original and the way they manage to create so many different voices is awesome. They are only four guys but when you hear their songs, it looks like they were more o less 20 people. It is very interesting when you stop for a while to hear carefully the lyrics.

Nirvana's songs

Tourette’s

Moderate Rock
Moderate Rock
May day, every day, my day

Could've had a heart attack, my heart

We don't know anything, my heart

We all want something fair, my heart

Hey hey hey hey hey!

Out of town, out of sight, is my heart

Queen of lies, today, my heart

One more on the phone, my heart

One more at the door of my heart

Hey hey hey!

Mean heart!

Cold heart!

The title of this song refers to Tourette’s syndrome, which is a disorder characterized by the presence of multiple physical tics involving the entire body, such as kicking and stamping and at least one verbal tic.The verbal tics may also be expressed as the involuntary use of obscene words or socially inappropriate words and phrases or obscene gestures, and i think that Kurt Cobain made this song thinking about those times when we feel like if we were under the influence of this syndrome and we couldn´t control ourselves. This happends often to me, and i love those moments because i feel free and i don’t think about what i’m doing or saying i just do it, and that’s all. When i hear it i get involved in the sunds and i a lose my mind, it drives me crazy, actually.

Lithium

I'm so happy cause today I found my friends.

They're in my head. I'm so ugly. But that's ok.

'Cause so are you.

We've broke our mirrors.

Sunday morning.

Is everyday for all I care.

And I'm not scared.

Light my candlrs.

In a daze cause I've found god.

Yeah I'm so lonely.

And that's ok. I shaved my head.

And I'm not sad.

And just maybe.

I'm to blame for all I've heard. And I'm not sure.

I'm so excited.

I can't wait to meet you there.
And I don't care.

I'm so horny.

But that's ok.

My will is good.

Yeah

I like it. I'm not gonna crack. I miss you.

I'm not gonna crack. I love you. I'm not gonna crack. I kill you.

I'm not gonna crack!

This song reminds me lots of feelings i used to have when i was younger, it represents the anger and the love at the same time.. It makes me think about a time full of confusion and desperation.

Civil War – Guns and Roses

"What we've got here is failure to communicate.

Some men you just can't reach...

So, you get what we had here last week,

which is the way he wants it!Well, he gets it!

N' I don't like it any more than you men."

Look at your young men fighting

Look at your women crying

Look at your young men dying

The way they've always done before

Look at the hate we're breeding

Look at the fear we're feeding

Look at the lives we're leading

The way we've always done before

My hands are tied

The billions shift from side to side

And the wars go on with brainwashed pride

For the love of God and our human rights

And all these things are swept aside

By bloody hands time can't deny

And are washed away by your genocide

And history hides the lies of our civil wars

D'you wear a black armband

When they shot the man

Who said "Peace could last forever"

And in my first memories

They shot Kennedy

I went numb when

I learned to see

So I never fell for Vietnam

We got the wall of D.C. to remind us all

That you can't trust freedom

When it's not in your hands

When everybody's fightin'

For their promised land

And I don't need your civil war

It feeds the rich while it buries the poor

Your power hungry sellin' soldiers

In a human grocery store

Ain't that freshI don't need your civil war

Look at the shoes your filling

Look at the blood we're spilling

Look at the world we're killing

The way we've always done before

Look in the doubt we've wallowed

Look at the leaders we've followed

Look at the lies we've swallowed

And I don't want to hear no more

My hands are tied

For all I've seen has changed my mind

But still the wars go on as the years go by

With no love of God or human rights

'Cause all these dreams are swept aside

By bloody hands of the hypnotized

Who carry the cross of homicide

And history bears the scars of our civil wars

"We practice selective annihilation of mayors

And government officialsFor example to create a vacuum

Then we fill that vacuum

As popular war advances

Peace is closer"

I don't need your civil war

It feeds the rich while it buries the poor

Your power hungry sellin' soldiers

In a human grocery store

Ain't that fresh

And I don't need your civil war

I don't need your civil war

I don't need your civil war

Your power hungry sellin' soldiers

In a human grocery store

Ain't that freshI don't need your civil war

I don't need one more war

I don't need one more war

Whaz so civil 'bout war anyway

We choose this song because it shows us how crazy the world is now. It reflects that men are killing themselves for nothing, without caring other peolple. Although these lyrics tell us about a specific landmark as the Civil War in America, we think that this kind of Civil War is generally happening in the world nowadays.

"Wish you were here" by Pink Floyd

So, so you think you can tell

Heaven from Hell,
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

We chose this lyric because it's one of Pink Floyd's popular songs, and it had been written for Syd Barret, a former member of the band who had to left it because of drug problems.

Ac Dc: “Decibel”

Take up all your time,

Kick up your heels, lookin' fine,
And you come riding blind,
You come rollin' back a while,
Wind blowin' on ya,
We're gonna move on and on,
Sweating heat, soak you all,
Being out will make you crawl all night,

Decibel, decibel,

Has you from deep inside,
You were waving then you smiled,
Give me rock and roll,
They're in love,
Love, in the rain,
They're in there rocking standing proud,

Decibel,
That's the history of rock and roll,
Decibel,

Rain is coming on,
We're gonna ride along,
A hundred miles in all,
Getting in night Â'til dawn,
Spread the joy going on,
Yeah, hard and long,
Staring down, with a shock hit the ground,

Decibel,
Decibel,
Decibel,
You come rolling back a while,
Decibel,

Decibel

We chose this because it is our favourite Ac Dc song. It is really energetic, crazy, and it has great guitar parts.                                                                                         By Fede and Toto (Federico and Hector).

Wednesday 29 April 2009

We choose that song because is one of the most popular from The Rolling Stones, so, everybody can sing it while they are reading. It`s one of the oldest they have done, but still have the same fame it had in the moment it was created. We also choose it because it has a lot of rithm and it is so funny!

Charlie García

Carlos García was born in Buenos Aires on October 32, 1951. As a child he lived in Caballito with his father Carlos García, a gym and math teacher, and his mother, Carmen Moreno who worked on the Radio.
Charly started to play music when his parents gave him a little paino, he played classical music like Mozart, Chopin and Bach, but he changed his music taste after listening to “The Beatles” his favourite rock and roll band.
At school he met Nito Mestre, they formed “Sui Generis” a famous band, their hits are: “Bienvenidos al tren”, “confesiones de invierno, “lunes otra vez”, among others. After this, Charly had to go to the military service so they separated for a period of time.
“La máquina de hacer pájaros” was his next band, it was formed by García, Moro, Fernández, Basterrica and Cutaia, they only edited 2 albums called: “La máquina de hacer pájaros” and “Películas”.
But Charly García is not only famous because of his music, he is always in trouble. First the militars threw him out of the militar service because of his bad behaviou. When this happened he wrote “Canción para mi muerte” a Sui Generis hit. Nowadays he can´t go to Uruguay because he had a fight with a national journalist. Some years ago he threw himself from a window in a hotel from the ninth floor. Bur that is not all, he is a drug addict, he is in Palito Ortega 's(famous Argentina´s singer) country farm, there he is recording a new album.
Charly García is a famous and very talented singer, but also very controversial.

The Rolling Stones

Who hasn’t sung “I can get no satisfaction” at least once in their lives? The Rolling Stones have clearly marked an era in rock music. It all started in 1962, in London, when Brian Jones and Ian Stewart joined Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts completed the early lineup. Jones dies in 1969, and is replaced by Mick Tyler, who leaves the band a few years later; Ronnie Wood then takes over his place. Ian Stewart died in 1985 and Bill Wyman leaves the band in 1993.
The Rolling Stones have collected many hits along their history, including “Paint It, Black”, “Brown Sugar”, “Sympathy for the Devil”, and the list goes on!
Even though the band has over 40 years of history, they keep releasing records and going on tours, and they have fans of all ages.
A curious fact about the band is that they don't have an official bassist, but Darryl Jones plays with them since Wyman left.

The Beatles

The complete name of the group is The Beatles. They played rock music. The band was formed in Liverpool, England in 1960. During their career the band was formed principally by John Lennon (guitar, voice), Paul McCartney (bass, voice), George Harrison (guitar, voice) and Ringo Starr (drum, voice) but at first other two members participated too: Pete Best in the drums and Stuart Sutcliffe in the bass. The first one was dismissed by the group in 1962 and replaced by Ringo, and the second one, sometimes called “The Fifth Beatle”, died of a brain haemorrage in 1962. From the beginning they played rock with the alternative psychodelic rock. They were one of the most famous bands in their times because of the lyrics and themes in their songs. It also helped their type of clothes and their way to be. Their songs were expanded to all over the world and they sold millions of albums. Their most famous songs are “Let it be”, “Yesterday”, “ Help!”, “Lucy in the sky with diamonds” and “I want to hold your hand”, among others.

Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd is an English psychedelic and progressive rock band, formed in London in 1965, by some members of a band called The Abdabs. Their former members were Syd Barret (singer and guitarist), Bob Klose (guitarist), Roger Waters (bass player),Richard Wright (keyboardist) and Nick Mason (drummer), but Bob Klose only recorded the first single of the band, “Arnold Layne”. Their first album, “The piper at the gates of dawn”, released in 1967, was almost entirely composed by Syd Barret, who had to leave the band the following year because of drug problems. By that time, David Gilmour, a new guitarist and, later, singer (with Roger Waters), joined the band. They became famous with popular albums like “The dark side of the moon” (containing the hits “Money”, “Brain damage”, “The great gig in the sky” and others), “Wish you were here”, which is dedicated to Syd Barret, “Animals”, and the double album “The Wall”; by the time of that release, Roger Waters and David Gilmour had been arguing for long years, and Waters finally left the band. In the eighties, he wanted to have the rights of Pink Floyd, but the other three members won the trial, and made two more albums and many videos with other additional personnel, until they separated in 1995. The members of the most succesful time of the band played two more concerts as Pink Floyd, one in 2003 and the other in 2007 (the last one in history, because Richard Wright died in 2008).

NIRVANA

The core of Nirvana was Kurt Cobain, lead guitarist and vocalist, and Krist Novoselic, bass player. After going through many many different name changes and member changes, Kurt and Krist met Chad Channing, who became their drummer for their debut album. Some of the other notable people that were in the band, or its earliest incarnations, were Buzz Osbourne and Dale Crover of the Melvins and Danny Peters of Mudhoney, among others.Nirvana recorded their Bleach album for about $600, a dark, crunching album containing simple, guitar driven like Negative Creep and School as well as more sophisticated songs like About a Girl, and a modified version of Shocking Blue's Love Buzz. It was released in June of '89 by Sub Pop records. After recording, Nirvana went on tour after the addition of guitarist Jason Everman. Jason was added because Kurt wasn't sure he could handle singing and playing guitar at the same time. Jason also helped contribute quite a bit of the money to record the debut LP.After touring and looking for another label, Nirvana was bought out of their two year contract by DGC, David Geffen's record label. They recorded their Nevermind album in May of '91 at Sound City studios in Los Angeles, CA. It was released on September 13, 1991 and went platinum in about three weeks, mostly due to the song Smells Like Teen Spirit, which has been labeled as the anthem of generation X. It went number one on the Billboard 200 chart in January, 1992.After a massive tour in support of Nevermind, Nirvana came back to The States. A collection of B-sides and rarities, called Incesticide was released, and sold well despite very little fanfare. After touring constantly, Nirvana once again returned to the studios in March of 1993 to record their long-awaited new album, In Utero.Originally, DGC was not pleased with the album at all. Their first comment upon hearing the recording was, "Nice demos. When can we expect to hear the finished album?" They thought that it had no commercial value at all, and would let Nirvana's fans down after the slick, radio friendly Nevermind album. A few of the songs were later remixed or rerecorded, but the majority of the album stayed the same. One of the reasons why it may not have sounded quite as sonic as Nevermind is that In Utero was recorded in two weeks. Most of the vocals were done in one day, with the help of a lot of cough syrup, and a lot of the songs were recorded in one take. But, after working out their difficulties with their company, In Utero was released on September 14, 1993 in the United Kingdom. Due to an unforseen delay, it was released in the United States on September 21, 1993. The foreign version also contained a secret track, Gallons of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through the Strip. It was described as a "Deflated American Dollar Purchase Incentive Track," on a sticker.Nirvana returned to the road, playing in the states and overseas. On January 8, 1994 Nirvana played their final American show in Seattle, Washington. They then toured Europe, playing their last show on March 1 in Munich, Germany. After returning to the United States, Kurt Cobain dissapeared after jumping the wall at the Exodus rehabilitation clinic, where he was undergoing rehab for a heroin addiction. Several days later, on April 8, his body was found by an electrician at his house in Seattle, Washington. Kurt had been dead for several days, the victim of a self inflicted gunshot wound. He left a suicide note near his body, explaning why he had killed himself. Fans still didn't accept his death, and many haven't still.Since Cobain's death, a number of albums have been released including "MTV Unplugged", "From The Muddy Banks of the Wishkah", "Nirvana" (best of), "With the lights out" (box set) and "Sliver: The best of the Box" in 2005.
